Amateur Radio and Linux - A Match Made in Heaven
While Ham radio, at least from a technical stand point, has taken a back burner for me lately, I’m still popping on the few repeaters in the area while I’m mobile. It’s also generally the best way to get a hold of my father.
One of my primary interests into Ham radio is how to use the computer to bring it to the next level. This is already done with several projects such a the Internet Repeater Linking Project and several programs that allow you to control your radio via a computer interface.
One such project, Fldigi, has just released version 1.2. Joe Barr at Linux.com recently posted a blog article, Fldigi and amateur radio on linux. He goes into detail explaining how it’s used and also a brief history about how Hams have used computers to communicate over the airwaves.
I’m not sure if my Yaesu FT8000-R is capable but I’ll certainly be checking it out in the very near future. If you’ve had experience with the software, let me know what you think of it.
