Dayton Hamvention 2007 - May 18-20

Well, only 1 day and 15 hours until I leave for Dayton. Once again this year I will be joining my father, KA8SPW and my grandfather, WA8OOH as we trek down.

For the trip down we’ll be connected to the Internet via an slow, but free, GPRS connection and will also be available on APRS as KA8SPW-15. You can track our progress on Find-U. Also for the trip I’m going to attempt to broadcast video of our trip down.

This idea of course is not new and is currently being done by WA5KUB as he broadcasts streaming video of their drive to and from as well as at the Hamvention. You can check out his site at www.wa5kub.com. During the drive you’ll mostly just get dashcam type video with music playing and the connection seems to go intermittent as they are using cellular networks. He has a booth from which they will also be broadcasting and that should prove more amusing as you’ll get to watch people roam about like cattle. They also have chat on the site but you’re stuck with their hokey Javascript based interface… unless of course you know how to use “netstat”.

For myself, since I’m only on a GPRS connection with a max download of 115kbps I’ll probably just limit to an image upload every 30 seconds. I’ll test it out tonight once I get home and start gathering my things.

As always my main goal once getting there will be to hit the flea market and cover it all by mid-day Saturday. This leaves the rest of the time for the vendors and booths in the arena. Though there’s nothing that I need or even want right now, I’ll sure not turn down a good deal. There is one vendor who sells audio equipment and also stocks the studiophones I use, the AudioTechnica MTH-40fs. The pair I have now are on their last leg and while I don’t have the $80 to spend on a new pair, I’ll see if I can’t use my Korg EM-1 as barter.

I’ll also be headed to the “Sign Man of Ohio” to pick up an RACES AEC badge so I can look spiffy. I do have a Skywarn badge but it’d be nice to make it official, at least in the eyes of people I meet.

I’ll be sure to take pics and make posts throughout the weekend as there’s always something goofy to see or hear. When you put this much dork, nerd and geek in once place there are no bounds to the weird you’ll experience.

As for weather we’re looking at the perfect weekend:

Friday

66F | 47F

Sunny
Saturday

72F | 52F

Partly Cloudy
Sunday

74F | 54F

Partly Cloudy

Models are also showing a nice patter for weather down there so there should be no worry. Last year’s weather was a little rainy in the morning but then sweltering for the rest of the weekend. Definitely walked away with a sunburn.

I’ll post again once we’re on the road!
